New central heating from £2,500. Full system design, supply, and installation. Gas Safe registered (972035).

We cover all of Middlesbrough — Linthorpe, Marton, Acklam, Hemlington, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham, Park End, Berwick Hills, and the Town Centre. TS1 through TS8. Middlesbrough’s got a proper mix of housing stock, from the Victorian terraces around Linthorpe with their solid walls and original pipework, through the 1960s-70s estates in Hemlington and Park End still running gravity-fed systems with tanks in the loft, to the modern detached builds in Nunthorpe and Coulby Newham with combi boilers. Each property type needs a different approach, and we design systems to match — not a one-size-fits-all job.

Common Central Heating Problems We Fix

Cold radiators downstairs, warm upstairs — Usually a circulation problem. The pump might be failing, or the system needs balancing. In older Middlesbrough properties with gravity-fed setups, the pipework is often undersized for modern demands. We’ll diagnose whether it’s the pump, an airlock, or sludge buildup causing the issue.

System losing pressure — Small leaks at joints, a faulty expansion vessel, or a pressure relief valve that’s weeping. We’ll track down exactly where the pressure’s going. In Victorian terraces, old pipework joints are the usual culprit.

Radiators cold at the bottom — Sludge and magnetite buildup. The system needs a powerflush or at minimum a chemical flush. We fit magnetic filters (MagnaClean or similar) to catch debris and stop it happening again.

Boiler firing but radiators not heating — Could be a stuck motorised valve (common on conventional systems), a faulty programmer, or a wiring issue with the room thermostat. We’ll test each component and find the fault.

Noisy heating system — Banging, gurgling, or whistling pipes. Usually air in the system, a failing pump, or pipework that’s not properly clipped. Sometimes it’s kettling in the boiler from limescale buildup.

Our Process

Give us a call or book online and we’ll arrange a survey. We’ll visit your property, measure every room, check existing pipework, and discuss what you want from the system. Within a couple of days you’ll get a detailed quote with everything itemised. Once you’re happy to go ahead, we’ll agree a start date and order materials. Installation typically takes 2-5 days depending on the property. After fitting, we commission the system, check every radiator, test all controls, and hand you the paperwork.

Middlesbrough Property Types and Heating Solutions

Victorian terraces (Linthorpe, central Middlesbrough) — Solid walls mean surface-mounted pipework or careful routing under floors. These properties often still have old conventional systems with tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard. Upgrading to a combi frees up that space, but we need to check water pressure first — some older terraces have low mains pressure that won’t support a combi properly. If that’s the case, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is the better option. We route pipework neatly and box it in where needed.

1960s-70s estates (Hemlington, Park End, Berwick Hills) — These were often built with gravity-fed heating and microbore or small-bore pipework. The systems work, but they’re inefficient by modern standards. Upgrading the boiler alone helps, but replacing the old pipework with standard 15mm and 22mm copper gives much better circulation. We often find old Grundfos pumps and Honeywell motorised valves that are on their last legs — replacing these at the same time makes sense.

Modern builds (Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham) — Mostly combi boilers with standard layouts. The main issue here is boilers reaching the end of their life (15-20 years old) and extensions that need additional radiators or underfloor heating. Zone controls are worth considering if you’ve got a bigger property — separate heating for upstairs and downstairs, so you’re not paying to heat rooms nobody’s using.

System Types We Work On

Combi systems — The most common in modern properties. One boiler does heating and hot water, no tanks or cylinders needed. Suits most 2-4 bed properties with one bathroom. We install Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, and other major brands.

System boilers — Better for larger properties with multiple bathrooms. Uses an unvented hot water cylinder for strong, mains-pressure hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously. The boiler has the pump and expansion vessel built in, making installation neater than a conventional setup.

Conventional (gravity-fed) — The old-style setup with a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder. Still found in plenty of older Middlesbrough properties. We can maintain these, upgrade them, or replace them entirely with a modern system.

Smart Controls and Thermostats

We install Hive, Nest, tado, Honeywell EvoHome, and most other smart heating controls. For straightforward setups, a smart thermostat like Hive or Nest lets you control heating from your phone and learn your schedule. For larger properties, Honeywell EvoHome gives you individual room control with TRVs that talk to the system wirelessly. We’ll advise which setup suits your property and budget.

Prevention Tips

  • Bleed your radiators at the start of every heating season — trapped air stops them heating properly
  • Check your boiler pressure monthly (should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold)
  • Get your boiler serviced annually to keep it running efficiently and maintain your warranty
  • If you’ve got a magnetic filter, get it cleaned during the annual service
  • Don’t block radiators with furniture — it traps heat and makes the system work harder
  • Set your thermostat to a consistent temperature rather than turning it on and off — it’s more efficient
  • If radiators feel cold at the bottom, book a powerflush before the sludge damages the boiler

How long does a new central heating system take to install?

Typically 2-5 days depending on property size and what’s involved. A straightforward combi swap in a modern Nunthorpe semi might be done in two days. A full system replacement in a Victorian Linthorpe terrace — new boiler, new radiators, new pipework — takes four to five days. Microbore replacement adds time because we’re pulling out old pipe and running new copper throughout the property. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after the survey so you can plan around it.

Should I upgrade from a conventional system to a combi?

It depends on your property. If you’ve got one bathroom and decent mains water pressure, a combi makes sense — it frees up the space taken by the loft tank and hot water cylinder, and you get instant hot water on demand. But if you’ve got two or more bathrooms, or low mains pressure, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is usually the better choice. We’ll test your mains flow rate during the survey and recommend what actually works for your situation.

Can you add radiators to my existing system?

Yes. We’ll check that your boiler has enough capacity and that the existing pipework can handle additional radiators. If your boiler’s already working near its limit, adding radiators without upgrading will just make the whole system underperform. We’ll be upfront about what’s needed. Common scenarios are extensions, loft conversions, and garages converted to living space. We’ll match the new radiators to the room’s heat loss so they actually warm the space properly.

What’s the difference between TRVs and zone controls?

TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) go on individual radiators and regulate temperature room by room. They’re simple, affordable, and we recommend them on every radiator except the one in the room with your thermostat. Zone controls are a step up — they split your heating into separate areas (typically upstairs and downstairs) with independent programmers and motorised valves. Each zone can be set to different temperatures and schedules. Zone controls are particularly worthwhile in larger properties where you don’t want to heat empty bedrooms all day.

Do you offer a guarantee on central heating installations?

All our installations come with a 12-month workmanship guarantee covering labour and installation. The boiler itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty — typically 5-10 years depending on the brand and model. We register the warranty for you and give you all the paperwork. To keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid, you’ll need an annual boiler service, which we can also arrange. If anything goes wrong with our installation work within the first year, we’ll come back and sort it at no extra cost.
