Before You Call - Things to Try

Sometimes a boiler fault is easy to fix yourself:

Try the reset button - Most boilers have a reset button. Hold it for 5-10 seconds. If the boiler fires up, great. If it cuts out again quickly, there’s an underlying fault.

Check the pressure - Look at the pressure gauge. If it’s below 1 bar, the boiler won’t fire. You can usually top it up using the filling loop (the braided hose underneath).

Check the thermostat - Is it set correctly? Are the batteries dead?

Check the condensate pipe - In cold weather, the condensate pipe (white plastic, runs outside) can freeze. Pour warm water over it to thaw it.

Check for error codes - If your boiler shows an error code, look it up in the manual or online. Some are simple fixes.

Common Boiler Problems

No heating or hot water

Usually the diverter valve (which switches between heating and hot water), the pump, or a control board fault. Sometimes it’s just low pressure.

Boiler keeps cutting out

Often low pressure, a blocked condensate pipe or a faulty PCB. It can also be overheating if the system is full of sludge.

Boiler makes banging noises

This is called “kettling” and is usually limescale or sludge in the heat exchanger. It may need descaling or a power flush.

Boiler leaking water

Internal seals, a cracked heat exchanger, or the pressure relief valve releasing. It needs inspecting to find the source.

Error codes showing

Each manufacturer uses different codes. Common ones point to ignition failure, flame loss or sensor faults. I can diagnose from the code.

Pilot light won’t stay on

A thermocouple or gas valve issue on older boilers. Modern boilers don’t have standing pilot lights.

Pressure keeps dropping

Usually a leak somewhere in the system (not always visible) or a failed expansion vessel.

Heating Controls & System Issues

Some heating faults aren’t the boiler itself. I often sort out:

• Thermostat or programmer issues (wiring, batteries, settings, faulty units)
• Boiler pressure dropping: topping-up advice and fixing the underlying cause
• Noisy heating or circulation problems (pump, pipework or air in the system)
• Hot water but no heating (or the other way round), often a diverter valve or control issue
• Intermittent heating faults (sensors, thermostats or electrical connections)
• Radiator valves stuck or leaking
• Zone valve faults on multi-zone systems

My boiler is under warranty - can you still repair it?

If it’s under the manufacturer’s warranty, contact the manufacturer first, as the repair may be covered. If they can’t help quickly and you need heat, I can repair it, but it may affect the remaining warranty.
