We connect our machine to your heating circuit and work through each radiator in turn. The machine forces water and chemicals at high velocity in both directions, dislodging deposits that have built up over years. A magnetic filter on the machine traps iron oxide as it comes out. Once every radiator runs clear, we add inhibitor to protect against future corrosion.

The flush itself works through each radiator one by one, reversing flow direction to shift stubborn sludge. We monitor what comes out — you can see the water change from black to clear as each radiator cleans up. The whole job typically takes 4-6 hours. Afterwards, we test every radiator to make sure it heats fully and evenly. You’ll feel the difference straight away.

Stockton’s Housing Stock and Sludge Problems

Victorian terraces (Norton, town centre, TS18-TS20) — Norton’s older properties often have original steel pipework and cast iron radiators. These systems produce more sludge than modern copper pipe because steel corrodes faster. Narrow bore pipework in these terraces blocks more easily, making cold radiators a common complaint. Combi heat exchangers are narrow and block faster than conventional boilers. Flushing before a new boiler installation is standard practice — manufacturers require it for warranty cover.

When Power Flushing Won’t Help

Power flushing clears sludge, but it can’t fix everything. If your pipework is severely corroded with pinhole leaks, high-velocity flushing may expose weak spots and cause more problems. We always check pipe condition first.

If a single radiator is cold but the rest are fine, a stuck thermostatic valve is more likely than system-wide sludge. We’ll diagnose the actual problem before recommending a flush — no point spending £350+ if a simple valve replacement sorts it.

Badly corroded microbore pipe sometimes won’t clear with flushing alone. In those cases, replacing the worst sections gives a better long-term result than forcing water through pipes that are almost blocked solid.

Prevention Tips

  • Install a magnetic filter — A MagnaClean or Adey filter catches rust particles before they settle in your radiators. Costs from £120 and dramatically reduces sludge buildup.
  • Maintain inhibitor levels — Corrosion inhibitor slows rust formation. Get it checked at your annual boiler service and topped up if needed.
  • Act on cold spots early — Don’t ignore radiators going cold at the bottom. The sooner you flush, the easier and cheaper the job.
  • Service your boiler annually — A good engineer checks inhibitor levels, system pressure, and looks for early signs of sludge.
  • Bleed radiators when needed — Trapped air speeds up corrosion. If you’re bleeding air frequently, there may be an underlying issue.

Do I need a power flush before a new boiler?

Most manufacturers — Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi — require a system flush before installation to validate the warranty. Old sludge pumped through a new heat exchanger can cause failure within months. We always recommend flushing before a new boiler goes in. It’s a fraction of the cost of a new boiler and protects your investment. If we’re installing the boiler too, we’ll include the flush as part of the job.

How do I know if my system needs flushing?

The clearest signs are cold spots on the bottom half of radiators, banging or kettling noises from the boiler, and black water when you bleed radiators. Slow heating and frequent pressure loss also point to sludge. If your system is 10+ years old and has never been flushed, it almost certainly has sludge building up — even if you haven’t noticed symptoms yet. Prevention is cheaper than fixing the damage sludge causes.

Can you power flush a combi system?

Absolutely. Combi boilers are actually more vulnerable to sludge than conventional systems because their plate heat exchangers have very narrow channels. A small amount of sludge that wouldn’t bother a conventional boiler can block a combi’s heat exchanger and cause kettling or loss of hot water. Regular flushing keeps the heat exchanger clean and extends the boiler’s life. We flush combis using the same process — connecting to the system and working through each radiator individually.

What if the power flush doesn’t fix the problem?

If cold radiators persist after flushing, the problem lies elsewhere. Stuck thermostatic valves, a failing circulation pump, or airlocks in the system can all cause cold radiators that look like sludge problems. We check all of these during and after the flush. If we find a valve or pump issue, we’ll fix it on the spot and give you a price for the extra work. No hidden charges.

How long will the results last?

With proper aftercare, 5-10 years between flushes. The key is maintaining your corrosion inhibitor levels and fitting a magnetic filter if you don’t already have one.
