Quick answer: A new radiator costs from £150 fitted (basic panel radiator). Replacement where pipework already exists is cheaper. If your radiator is cold at the bottom, it’s usually sludge - try bleeding it first, but a power flush may be needed.

Radiator Installation and Repair in Middlesbrough

Need an extra radiator for a cold room? Want to upgrade old radiators to something more stylish? Or got a radiator that won’t heat up properly? We’re Gas Safe registered (972035) and handle all radiator work across Middlesbrough and Teesside.

Radiator Services

New Radiator Installation

Adding a radiator where there isn’t one - for extensions, conservatories, or rooms that were skipped when the system was originally installed. We’ll tap into your existing pipework and size the radiator for the space.

Radiator Replacement

Swapping old radiators for new. This is straightforward if the pipework is in the right place - usually a 1-2 hour job per radiator.

Radiator Relocation

Moving a radiator to a different wall. Common when renovating or when the current position doesn’t suit your furniture layout.

Radiator Repairs

Fixing leaks, replacing valves, and dealing with radiators that don’t heat properly.

What’s Included

Every radiator job includes:

  • Assessing the space and calculating the correct BTU output
  • Draining down the system (or using freeze kits for single radiator work)
  • Supply and fitting of the radiator, valves, and any pipework needed
  • Refilling, pressurising, and bleeding the system
  • Testing that the radiator heats fully and evenly
  • Cleaning up — we take away old radiators and packaging

If we spot wider system issues during the work (sludge, pressure problems, failing valves elsewhere), we’ll let you know and quote separately.

Radiator Problems and Fixes

Cold at the bottom, hot at the top

Cause: Sludge buildup. Magnetite (black iron oxide) accumulates over years and settles at the bottom of radiators.

Fix: Sometimes bleeding and draining helps temporarily. A proper fix is a power flush to clear the whole system, or replacing the radiator if it’s badly clogged.

Cold at the top, hot at the bottom

Cause: Air trapped in the radiator.

Fix: Bleed the radiator. Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve until water comes out. Do this with the heating off and cooled down.

Completely cold

Cause: Could be a stuck valve, circulation problem, or the radiator is isolated.

Fix: Check both valves are open (the lockshield valve has a cap). If valves are open and it’s still cold, there may be a blockage or pump issue.

Radiator leaking from the valve

Cause: Worn valve seal or loose connection.

Fix: Valve replacement. Usually straightforward and doesn’t require draining the whole system.

Radiator leaking from the body

Cause: Corrosion has created a hole, usually at the bottom.

Fix: Radiator needs replacing. A temporary patch might buy time, but it’ll leak again.

Types of Radiators

Panel Radiators

The standard choice. Single, double, or triple panel depending on heat output needed. Cost-effective and widely available.

Column Radiators

Traditional cast-iron style (though modern versions are steel). High heat output and classic look. Popular in period properties.

Designer Radiators

Modern styles - vertical, horizontal, flat panel, mirror fronted. More expensive but can be a feature rather than just a heat source.

Towel Radiators

For bathrooms. Heated towel rails double as towel storage and space heating.

Vertical Radiators

Tall and narrow - useful for rooms with limited wall space. Output per height is less than traditional radiators, so you may need larger sizing.

Sizing Radiators Correctly

Radiators need to be sized for the room. Too small and the room won’t get warm; too big wastes energy and money.

We calculate BTU (heat output) requirements based on:

  • Room dimensions
  • Number of windows and external walls
  • Insulation quality
  • What the room is used for

Then we select a radiator that matches. This is included when you book an installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fit a radiator?

Replacement (same position): 1-2 hours. New radiator with pipework: 2-3 hours. Multiple radiators are more efficient per unit.

Can you move a radiator to a different wall?

Yes - we can relocate radiators and extend the pipework. Expect some making good needed where the old radiator was.

Should I upgrade to thermostatic valves?

TRVs let you control temperature room by room, which can save energy. Worth doing if your valves are old manual ones. We fit them during radiator work at a reduced rate.

Why are my radiators making noise?

Gurgling usually means trapped air - try bleeding them. Clicking or ticking is normal expansion/contraction. Banging may indicate a circulation or pressure issue.

Can I add radiators to a combi boiler system?

Yes, as long as the boiler has enough capacity. Adding too many radiators to an undersized boiler means nothing heats properly. We’ll check during the survey. If you’re planning a bigger upgrade, see our central heating page.
