Teesside winters mean heating costs add up quickly. A smart thermostat won’t transform an inefficient boiler or poorly insulated home, but it can stop you heating an empty house. Here’s what you need to know before buying one.
What a smart thermostat actually does
A basic timer turns your heating on and off at set times. A smart thermostat goes further:
- Learns your schedule — After a week or two, it knows when you’re usually home and adjusts automatically.
- Weather compensation — If it’s milder outside, it reduces the target temperature or delays the morning heating.
- Phone control — Stuck at work late? Turn the heating down remotely.
- Geofencing — Some detect when your phone leaves the house and switch to away mode. When you’re on your way back, they warm the place up again.
The key benefit is stopping wasteful heating. If you regularly heat an empty house because your timer doesn’t match your actual routine, a smart thermostat pays for itself faster.
The main options available in 2026
There’s no single best choice. What works depends on your home, your boiler, and how much control you want.
Hive
Popular UK choice, works with most combi boilers, straightforward app, good customer support. Installation is simple enough for confident DIYers but professionals can fit it in under an hour. Budget roughly £180–£250 including professional installation.
Good for: Most Teesside homes with standard combi boilers. Simple, reliable, does the job.
Tado
Strong geofencing, room-by-room control if you add smart TRVs, works with most boiler types. The geofencing is more aggressive than Hive — it reacts faster when you leave. Budget roughly £200–£350+ depending on whether you add TRVs for individual room control.
Good for: Larger homes, or homes where some rooms are used more than others.
Honeywell Evohome
Full zoned heating control, works with most systems including older setups, more complex to configure but very capable. You get granular control over when each room heats and to what temperature. Budget roughly £250–£450+ depending on how many zones you set up.
Good for: Larger homes, families with different schedules, homes with distinct heating zones.
Nest
Google Nest thermostats have had availability changes in the UK over the past couple of years. Check current stock and support status before committing. If available, budget roughly £200–£280. The learning algorithm is good, but UK availability isn’t always consistent.
Good for: Check first whether it’s still actively sold and supported in the UK.
Other options
Drayton Wiser, Netatmo, and a few other brands offer similar features. They’re generally solid but less widely used in the UK, which can mean fewer local installers familiar with them.
Compatibility — what works with your boiler?
Most smart thermostats work with standard combi boilers, which cover the vast majority of Teesside homes. Installation is straightforward: the new thermostat replaces your old one, usually using the same wiring.
System boilers and older heating setups sometimes need additional wiring or a wireless receiver box. If you have an older boiler or an unusual setup, check compatibility before buying. Most manufacturers list compatible boiler types on their websites.

Manufacturers claim 10–30% savings on heating bills. Real-world savings depend entirely on your current habits.
If you already use a timer effectively and turn the heating down when you’re out, savings will be modest — maybe 5–10%. A smart thermostat just automates what you’re already doing.
If you leave the heating on all day because you can’t be bothered adjusting the timer, or you heat the house at the weekend even when you’re out, you’ll see bigger savings — potentially 15–25%.
For a typical Teesside home spending £800–£1,200 per year on heating, a reasonable estimate is £100–£180 per year savings. Payback time is roughly 18 months to 3 years, depending on the system you choose and your current habits.

Installation
Some smart thermostats are designed for DIY installation — Hive and Tado both include instructions and support. If you’re comfortable with basic wiring and can follow a diagram, it’s doable.
But if you’re not confident, get a professional. Incorrect wiring can damage the boiler, cause the heating to behave unpredictably, or in rare cases create a safety issue. Professional installation typically adds £60–£100 to the cost and guarantees the job is done right.

Smart TRVs — room-by-room control
A step beyond a smart thermostat. Smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) replace the manual knobs on your radiators and let you control each radiator individually from your phone.
This is useful if:
- You have a spare bedroom you rarely use — no point heating it every day.
- You have an open-plan downstairs but separate bedrooms upstairs — different heating schedules make sense.
- You have a larger home with rooms that serve different purposes.
But smart TRVs are £50–£70 per radiator, so the cost adds up quickly. For a three-bedroom home with eight radiators, you’re looking at £400–£560 just for the TRVs, plus the smart thermostat itself.
Good for larger homes or families with very different schedules. Overkill for most smaller homes.
Common misconceptions
A smart thermostat won’t fix an inefficient boiler. If your boiler is more than 12–15 years old, it’s probably running at 70–80% efficiency. A new boiler runs at 92–94% efficiency. That’s a bigger saving than any thermostat can deliver.
It won’t fix poor insulation. If your home loses heat quickly because of single-glazed windows, poor loft insulation, or draughty doors, a smart thermostat just optimises a leaky system. Fix the insulation first.
It’s not a miracle. A smart thermostat is an optimisation tool. It stops wasteful heating, but it doesn’t create savings out of thin air. If you already heat your home efficiently, the gains are marginal.
Our recommendation for Teesside homes
For most homes with a standard combi boiler, Hive or Tado are solid choices. They’re reliable, widely supported, and straightforward to use.
If you want room-by-room control and have a larger home, consider Tado with smart TRVs or Honeywell Evohome. The upfront cost is higher, but the control is much finer.
If you’re not confident with wiring, get professional installation. It’s not worth risking damage to your boiler to save £80.
